Palm Desert I, Oil on Canvas, 40x30", 2020
I painted this after visiting Palm Springs and Palm Desert and being mesmerized by tree reflections in the pool - a beautiful and calm oasis fabricated for our enjoyment.
The trees are painted upside down literally and figuratively reflecting an inner conflict between observed beauty, serenity and unease I felt in using so much of the natural resource - water for fake environments.
While painting the trees I allowed the paint to drip, and added multiple thin layers of oil paint. The scene also reminded me of childhood memories looking at tree reflections in the local streams and rivers of England, so in my mind the two images merged and the painting became more anchored in reality of the beauty of nature.
